Credit monitoring services are typically overpriced products (up to $180 a year) not worth the cost, but keeping a close eye on your credit reputationis really important. Improving your credit score can save you thousands of dollars in interest on a loan and even influence whether or not you get a job.
In the past, Credit Karma had limited enrollment promotions for its free credit monitoring, but now the service is free for everyone. The service proactively monitors your credit report from TransUnion and sends you an email if it finds any big changes, such as new credit inquiries, new credit accounts, new public records, and so on. The monitoring can help protect you from fraud or ID theft, and also alert you of any delinquent payments you make that could lower your credit score.
To get the service, sign up for a free Credit Karma account and opt-in to the free credit monitoring, or, if you’re already a member, go to your profile section and select “Notify me about important changes on my credit report.”
