A lot of us rely heavily on email throughout each and every day. I know I am constantly checking mine and always making sure to respond in a timely manner. One thing about email that I always wish was more customizable was my signature. I know that you can customize it, but I have always wanted an easier way to do this.

Then an iPhone app called Signature came along a little while back and it intrigued me because it gave you the capability to create your own signature right on your iPhone. Once I saw the app, I knew I had to try it out and see if it could actually help me solve my problem of customizing my email signature. Did it? Let’s find out after the break.

Adding Content

When you first open up Signature, you are going to want to fill out some details about yourself. You can choose to add as much or as little as you want, it really all depends on what you are comfortable with people seeing. So, you’ve heard about all of this minimalist, “barefoot-style” running, and you want in. Thing is, those toe-shoes look really weird. You don’t want any padding, but you don’t want your foot pierced by rocks either. Is there a balance point? Yes, there is.

What Is It?

Merrell’s second generation of minimalist road runners, very similar to its hugely popular Trail Glove series.

Who’s it For?

People who want a minimalist running experience on pavement, but don’t want that toe-shoe look.

Design

The first thing you’ll notice is that they look like a normal shoe, which is great for A) your social life, and B) gyms that don’t allow toe-shoes in the weight rooms. The shoes are very flat and have a wide toe box. The sole is made by Vibram, and it’s not totally unlike their FiveFinger shoes (though it is a bit thicker). They feel very solidly built.

Using It

It’s like your feet are being swaddled by a loving mother; they feel secure, and the lacing system makes foot-sliding all but non-existant. At the same time the wide toe-box allows your toes to splay naturally, which is critical for barefoot-style running. There are so many options out there – freeware and shareware – that it’s often hard to find the quality applications. Some applications luck into a great deal of publicity, but too often great apps do not get the attention that they deserve.

This article has five utility apps that I use just about every day but haven’t ever read or heard much about. The apps range from a screenshot application to a great touchpad tool that I love. Read on to learn about five of my favorite free apps that you should check out today.

PixAM

The first application is an all-in-one screenshot taking, editing and sharing application. If I use PixAM on my computer, the shot I take is automatically synced to the cloud for access on my computer, iPad or iPhone. You can utilize the application for immediate editing with a variety of tools and colors. It even provides a URL with every screenshot to share the shot with friends or co-workers via email.

OS X: Back in the days before OS X, Apple created a notes app called Stickies to let you post little colored notes all over your screen. Despite a lack of updates for years, it’s still widely used and a favorite among many. Nootes is an app that works similarly to Stickies but provides a number of additional features. If you’ve wished for a Stickies upgrade, you’ll want to check this out.

When it comes to simple, syncing note apps, we still love Notational Velocity, but I’m probably not the only one out there that uses more than one notes app to manage the text in their daily lives. While I was never a big Stickies user, I always liked the idea and essentially repurposed it with TextEdit by leaving information I planned to use at some point but just needed to store there temporarily. It didn’t really make a whole lot of sense, so I really came to like the idea of Nootes because it’s kind of a combination of both. It works great as a series of little scratch pads. You can choose between several styles, just like Stickies, but you can also write full screen so it doubles as a distraction-free typing app. On top of that, you can password-protect your notes

Mobile banking is far from perfect. But Simple aims to fix that with a cool, comprehensive replacement that rolls all of your financial services into one.

Once you sign up, you get a Visa bank card, then you’ll be given very detailed information on each of your transactions. You can keep track of your expenditures online, as well as on the iPhone app. For now, the service is available only by invitation.

iOS (jailbroken): Sparrow is a fantastic mail client for iOS, but without push notifications and the ability to become your default client, it falls a little short. Jailbroken iOS users can add both of those features with the free Sparrow+ tweak.

Sparrow+, available in the Cydia app store, essentially bundles previously mentioned Sparrow Push with the ability to make Sparrow your default email client. So, whenever you click on an email link in Safari or send an email from your Contacts app, it’ll take you to Sparrow instead of the built-in Mail app (we still can’t believe Apple hasn’t built this into iOS yet). You’ll find this setting in your Settings app, while you’ll find the Sparrow Push settings in their regular location in the Sparrow app itself. And, you can customize your notifications in the Notification Center.
